Born in Stuttgart in 1968, Erik Parker received his BFA in 1996 from the University of Texas and his MFA from SUNY Purchase in New York State; he currently lives and works in New York City. Parker’s work is influenced as much by ‘outsider’ or ‘subcultural’ art forms such as community murals, folk art, and graffiti, as by traditional high art references such as Rousseau, Picasso, and Lichtenstein. Parker describes his sensibility as “blue collar formalism”. His subjects range from

organic and hieroglyphic text-based motifs to intricately patterned portraits, landscapes, and still lifes which border on abstraction. His canvases are characterized by their highly sophisticated compositional designs, high-impact color schemes, and labor intensive painting techniques. Parker’s solo museum exhibitions include The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Modern Art Museum Fort Worth, De Appel, and Cornerhouse UK.
