Gavin Turk was born in Guildford UK in 1967 and attended Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art in London, completing his studies in 1991. Turk’s work was showcased in the original Young British Art exhibition series at Saatchi Gallery in 2005, and later featured in the 1997 Sensation show; he is one of the most recognizable names in British Art today. His solo museum exhibitions have included CAC Malaga, The Hague GEM Museum,
MAGASIN Grenoble, CAC Geneva, and Tate. Legacy, authorship, authenticity, and contemporary mythology are themes which run throughout Turk’s works, which often appropriate motifs, methodologies, and media from well known artists such as Andy Warhol, Rene Magritte, and Alighiero Boetti. He is also well known for his self-portraits in the guise of famous cultural figures such as Sid Vicious, Elvis, and Che Guevara. Turk lives and works in London.
