John Bauer

  • John Bauer was born in 1971 in San Diego and received his BA in Studio Art in 1993 from the University of California; he now lives and works in Los Angeles. Bauer’s paintings draw from a host of American traditions ranging from Pop to Minimalism and Abstract expressionism, and employ methodologies associated with mass media and street art. His paintings are developed through an intensive process that starts with computer manipulated drawings or digital images which are then translated to the canvas using exclusively ‘hands-off’ techniques such as screen printing, stenciling, spray paint, or rollers. Bauer’s reductive palettes and flat surface veneers paradoxically create an almost holographic sense of space. Themes which run throughout his work include authorship, authenticity, contemporary anxiety, and the meaningful possibility for painting in a post-digitized age.
