Mario Testino OBE is widely regarded as one of the most influential fashion and portrait photographers of his generation. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has built an unmistakable visual language, celebrated for its vitality, elegance, sensuality and immediacy. Working across fashion, portraiture and cultural projects, Testino has shaped the image of contemporary glamour while maintaining a strong connection to identity, tradition and human presence.
Born in Lima in 1954, Testino moved to London in 1976, where he began developing his practice after training in photographic studios. Far from the worlds of fashion and celebrity in which he would later become a defining figure, his early life in Peru, along with formative periods spent in Brazil, continued to inform his visual sensibility. This personal background helped him create a style that feels at once polished and instinctive, combining spontaneity with emotional clarity.
Testino became internationally known through his work for leading luxury houses including Gucci, Burberry, Versace, CHANEL, Estée Lauder and Dolce & Gabbana, as well as for his longstanding contributions to major international publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. His photographs are recognised for their ability to reveal both the public image and the humanity of his subjects, whether supermodels, artists, actors, musicians or members of royal families.
Among the most memorable chapters of his career is his 1997 portrait sitting with Diana, Princess of Wales, commissioned by Vanity Fair. The images remain among the most iconic portraits of their era and marked an important moment in Testino’s practice, opening the way to further royal portrait commissions across Europe and the Middle East. His work has often been noted for its dialogue with the tradition of classical portraiture, while remaining distinctly contemporary in tone and energy.
Alongside fashion and portrait photography, Testino has pursued broader artistic and cultural investigations. His series A Beautiful World, begun in 2018, reflects his ongoing interest in global culture, dress, ritual and heritage, presenting powerful images that celebrate the richness and diversity of communities around the world. This attention to cultural expression also connects with his wider engagement as a collector, curator, collaborator and founder.
Testino’s work has been exhibited internationally in leading museums and institutions, including the National Portrait Gallery, London; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Metropolitan Museum in Tokyo; Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid; MALBA, Buenos Aires; Foam, Amsterdam; and the Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin. His photographs have also been presented in gallery exhibitions in London, Paris and beyond, confirming his position within both the worlds of fine art and visual culture.
His publications include more than twenty books, among them Portraits, Let Me In!, Kate Moss by Mario Testino, In Your Face, Alta Moda, SIR, Undressed and Ciao. These volumes reflect the breadth of his practice, from formal portraiture and fashion imagery to intimate studies of style, personality and cultural identity.
Beyond photography, Testino has been deeply committed to philanthropy and to the promotion of art and heritage in his native Peru. In 2012, he founded MATE – Museo Mario Testino in Lima, a non-profit institution dedicated to culture and creative exchange. His charitable initiatives have also included long-term support for organisations such as Save the Children, amfAR, the Elton John AIDS Foundation and CLIC Sargent, as well as the creation of the Parques Teresita playground projects in Peru.
Testino has received numerous honours in recognition of both his artistic achievements and philanthropic work, including the Order of the British Empire in 2014 and the title of Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 2017. His work continues to occupy a singular place within contemporary photography, where fashion, portraiture, culture and personal vision converge.
