The first exhibition of New York-based artist Al Freeman’s work at Caravan Gstaad, the salon and library located in a former Alpine farmhouse that serves as an annex to the main gallery.

Known for her satirical sculptures in loosely stuffed vinyl, Freeman’s show is ironically named Aspen, after the famed ski resort in the US. The exhibition is comprised of large-scale replicas of recognisable consumer items in the artist’s preferred material of stuffed vinyl, from local signifiers like a slice of Emmental cheese and a Swiss Army knife to a bottle of Jägermeister, a gold “Princess” necklace, a bottle of Dom Perignon, and a gold bar. Freeman’s soft, wall-mounted sculptures simultaneously objectify and let the air out of all the clichés that can be associated with the idyllic barn and locale in which the show takes place.
